Maverick Vinales, the MotoGP rider, has made a difficult decision to step away from the sport temporarily due to an ongoing shoulder injury. This comes as a blow to his 2025 season, which has been plagued by this injury since July's German Grand Prix qualifying.
Vinales' presence on the track has been inconsistent, with a mix of missed races, mid-weekend withdrawals, and subpar performances. Despite his efforts, the best results from recent full weekends in Barcelona, Misano, and Motegi were a 17th-place grid position in Misano and a 13th-place finish in the Catalan GP.
He joins Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin, and Ai Ogura, who are also absent from the upcoming Phillip Island race due to injuries. Ogura, in particular, has been battling fitness issues since his Misano crash last month.
Vinales' recent withdrawal from the Indonesian GP qualifying highlighted the severity of his situation. He admitted that taking a break might be the best course of action to fully recover. The lack of strength in his shoulder affects his performance, especially in fast directional changes, causing him to lose valuable time on the track.
"We need to make a smart decision," Vinales said after practice at Mandalika. "Should I stop and recover fully, or continue like this? It's a tough choice because I'm in pain and I'm not getting the feedback I need from the bike. We must find the fastest way to recover."
KTM test rider Pol Espargaro will replace Vinales for the Phillip Island and Sepang races. Espargaro's previous stand-in performances at Brno and Balaton were impressive, consistently finishing in the top 10 and qualifying for Q2 at Balaton.
After the Australia/Malaysia double-header, MotoGP takes a two-week break before the final races in Portimao and Valencia. Vinales' decision to skip the next two rounds gives him almost a month to recover before the Portugal race.
